REQUIEM FOR MATERIALITY

Admiring the significance of the material in the past, while mourning it’s dissolving and disappearance in the presence, are the opposite leads of this collection. 

Illuminated manuscripts from the Medieval and Renaissance periods are the starting point of the process this collection exhibits, as a metaphor for manual and total crafting which is being depicted in materialistic, formative and colorful richness. The collection explores the process of the dismantling of the material and the disappearance of hand-crafting, through the industrial printing on to the digital screen where the material and it’s processing are all but gone.

The collection celebrates the virtuosic hand-craft and the appreciation of details, against tactics of abstracting, duplicating, pixelating and dissolving material and imagery to accentuate the death of the craft.

Materials: Mostly natural-fiber materials combined with synthetic fabrics: hand-made and machine-fabricated jacquards, velvets, hand knits and other rich textiles along side basic simple textiles, such as muslin, used as canvas for textile enriching such as embroidery. These different techniques have been applied to perform acts of embellishing and enriching on the one hand, and dissolving and dismantling on the other.
